Girls Empowerment Skills Program (GES)

2 June – 28 Oct 2022

Girls Empowerment Skills program (GES) is a digital literary, social & emotional intelligence and reproductive health training, for young girls in the regions of Dar Es Salaam, Zanzibar, Mwanza and Arusha. The training involves young girls aged between 12 ( those who are about to enter adolescence and already in adolescence) and 25 (those who are ready to get into the world of work or entrepreneurship). In partnership with Tanzania English Teachers Association (TELTA), IMED Foundation and T Marc Tanzania, the training will introduce young Tanzanian girls to digital skills, entrepreneurship skills, social and emotional intelligence skills and menstrual and reproductive health skills with the aim of  preparing the young girls for maturity and adolescence, das well as ensuring that young girls are accessing skills that come with opportunities that will help them become full actors of their own well being  and becomes agents of change and responsible citizen in their communities.

At UJUZI Tanzania Skills Forum, we believe skills can unlock Tanzanians youth potential potential. Yet, many youth especially girls are actively discouraged from pursuing science in high school, assuming they complete their secondary education. At UJUZI, we seek and identify Tanzania’s girls and provide them with a world-class skills and training of the future that will develop them into the female leaders of tomorrow.

Youth particularly girls face huge challenges to developing their full potential, poverty, gender discrimination and lack of access. We provide free life skills trainings for young women from low-income background to ensure they are given the education opportunities they deserve. We believe women should be at the forefront of Tanzania’s transformation and, at UJUZI, we are ensuring they will be.

After conducting a girls skills need assessment, the identified demanded skills were:

  1. Digital Literacy Skills particularly for primary and secondary school girls
  2. Reproductive health and mental health skills for girls entering the teen age

3. Social and emotional intelligence skills for all girls aged 15-25

Women & Girls in STEM Excellence Awards

9 Dec 2022

  • To encourage the participation of young girls in STEM, the girls in STEM Excellence awards rewards girls’ students for completing and performing in STEM subjects and activities and provides a framework to encourage higher levels of engagement in STEM learning.

These awards are important as they recognise top-performing girls and women from across the STEM space and provide inspiration for younger women looking to build a career in the industry.

The challenge of increasing diversity in STEM is our top agenda at UJUZI, but it is far from a solved problem. Women are still under-represented across this industry, especially at higher positions, and they’re also likely to be paid less than their male counterparts for the same work.
